Christ is our mediator with God, and we can have direct access to Him through a personal relationship with Jesus.
For this reason, if we do not deal with sin promptly, it can quickly cloud our minds and poison our hearts.
When a person accepts Christ as Lord and Savior, they are born again, and the Holy Spirit dwells within them.
“But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.”
2 Corinthians 3:16 ESV
However, certain sinful attitudes and behaviors do grieve and quench the Holy Spirit, creating a barrier between us and the beauty of Christ, which the Spirit gives and reveals.
When we sin, we open the door to sin further and give the devil a foothold in our lives, occupying our hearts with fleshly and worldly concerns.
Over time, sin brings confusion, heaviness, and spiritual destruction.
In this way, sin becomes a veil between Christ and us. Below are some of the most common sins that hinder us from seeing and delighting in the beauty of Christ.
Disobedience to God
The first one is disobedience.
God is constantly speaking to us—through His Spirit and His Word, through other people, and in many different ways. But are we truly listening when He speaks? Do we even want to hear what He has to say? Are our spiritual ears open to the truth?
Do we obey His voice, or do we hide behind a shell of pride and self-righteousness?
Don’t try to ignore or silence His voice. Instead, receive it with humility and allow God to lead you where He desires to take you.
We have all experienced how it feels when we ask someone to do something, and they ignore us. How do you think God feels when we choose disobedience?
When God calls us to act, we should respond with a willing heart, ready to do good works according to His will.
He is our good and loving Father, so how could we not obey the voice of our Good Shepherd?
Disobedience to the voice of God doesn’t keep God from speaking; it keeps you from hearing.
Married to God
First and foremost, we are married to God, and He is a jealous God:
“Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?
James 4:5 ESV
For this reason, we are called to live in wholehearted devotion, walking in the way God asks of us.
We are called to be holy and set apart, to sanctify our hearts and wash our robes in His living water.
But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:15-16 ESV
Are there any worldly gods you are serving or running after, or idols God is whispering to you to lay down?
For me personally, God confronted me with the idol of money during a wilderness season. As painful as the process of tearing it down was, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to let go of every sin that was separating me from stepping fully into His marvelous light.
Have faith
The second sin that can put a veil between Christ and us is a lack of faith.
When we come to God, the first step is to believe that He exists and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him:
“And without faith, it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
I struggled with this sin for a long time, until I fell into a kind of spiritual sickness where my heart was so burdened with worldly concerns that I could no longer see the goodness and mercy of the Lord. It was in that season that God revealed how a lack of faith can bring a person low:
“If you are not firm in the faith, you will not be firm at all.”
Isaiah 7:9 ESV
From that moment on, I resolved to stop living in fear and to fully trust God, no matter the circumstances. Living in constant fear only wastes our time and energy, distracting us from prayer, Scripture, and the life-giving presence of the Lord.
Faith and Prayer
No matter the situation you find yourself in, pray with faith. Never doubt His goodness, for those who doubt have no fellowship with the Lord and are unstable in all their ways:
“But let him ask in faith, without doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.“
James 1:6 ESV
Praying with faith does not mean you will receive everything you want. God gives what you truly need, often in ways you don’t expect. But He provides for your good, and everything He does brings glory to His name. Trust Him and have faith, for He is good at all times!
And if you struggle with a lack of faith, ask God to increase it.
“The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”
Luke 17:5 ESV
Pride before the fall
The third sin is pride. Are you too proud to bow before God’s throne?
We cannot experience true fellowship with the Lord while pride rules our hearts. Cast your pride at His feet, and watch how His redeeming love transforms you into the person He created you to be.
Fear God and avoid self-righteousness, for He sees all:
“Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.”
Proverbs 3:7 ESV
Only God knows what is truly best for us. Don’t try to solve life’s problems on your own—turn to Him for all your needs.
“In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Proverbs 3:6 ESV
The Freedom of Forgiveness
The fourth sin is unforgiveness.
Do not allow the bitterness of unforgiveness to blind your mind or harden your heart toward others. When our hearts are filled with resentment, we cannot expect God to forgive us either:
“For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. “But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.”
Matthew 6:14-15 ESV
Unforgiveness only hurts the one who refuses to let go. Forgiveness, on the other hand, brings light and freedom into your heart. Move forward and live as the salt of the earth:
“As the Lord has forgiven you, so must you forgive.”
Colossians 3:13
Jesus paid the price for all our sins on the cross, so we no longer have to live in shame and guilt, but in freedom.
“He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.”
Colossians 2:14
If God has forgiven us for our trespasses, how can we refuse to forgive others?
As true vessels of Jesus Christ, we are called to love those who have wronged us, bless them, and live at peace with everyone:
“For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?”
Matthew 5:46
Forgive while there is still time, for we do not know when our Father will return. And if you find it difficult to forgive right away, pray to God for the strength and power to do so.
Show mercy
Show mercy to everyone, especially those who have hurt you, for the Bible says:
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.”
Matthew 5:7
Respect others, even when they do not respect you. Show love and patience to all people, and let your light stand out like a shining star in the crowd.
Let Christ’s love be visible in everything you do and wherever you go.
Rebelliousness is as the sin of witchcraft
The fifth sin that puts a veil between you and Christ is rebelliousness toward God.
If you try to do things your way, God will let you do them in some way—but not without consequences.
I remember receiving an invitation to work for a company I had previously worked with, and it was a pleasure to be part of their team. At first, it felt like an exciting blessing.
I was thrilled and immediately said, “Of course I’ll accept their offer!” It seemed like the perfect opportunity—at least that’s how it appeared at the time.
Everything seemed fine—until the day before I started, when I asked myself, “Did I even ask God if this is His will?” The answer was no.
From the very first day I started working there, it felt as though God began to disable all my abilities to work. I felt completely paralyzed. Tasks I once handled with ease became impossible. I couldn’t remember instructions, and even the simplest assignments went wrong.
For a brief time, I ignored it, thinking, I need money. But my abilities continued to fail until I could do almost nothing during the day.
Through this process, God revealed that accepting the job was not His will because He had other plans for me. My rebellion came with consequences—paralyzing my efforts and teaching me a vital lesson:
We may think we need something, but only God knows our true needs:
“Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
Matthew 6:8 ESV
When we insist on our own way, we will inevitably fail.
So resist the temptations of the world and the desires of the flesh. Resist the lies of the enemy, and fill your mind with God’s Truth.
Crucify the flesh
The sixth sin that can place a veil between Christ and us is the lust of the flesh.
Do not become anxious or consumed by worldly concerns—what to eat, what to wear, which path to take, or what tomorrow may bring. God already knows all these things, and He will provide what you truly need:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33
As born-again Christians, our focus is not on satisfying the flesh but on walking in the way of Christ, which calls us to deny ourselves. Scripture says:
“Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Matthew 16:24
“And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.”
Matthew 10:38
Deny your fleshly desires daily and surrender your ways to the Lord. When your eyes are truly fixed on Him, the presence of the Holy Spirit will fill you with holy fire.
Submit to God, resist the devil
The seventh reason for the absence of the Holy Spirit is a lack of full submission to the Lord.
Submit everything—your day, desires, plans, thoughts, emotions, will, and every area of your life—to the Lord. Above all, submit to His authority rather than the authority of the world.
Fear the Lord and surrender all anxious thoughts to Him, for He cares deeply for you:
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.“
1 Peter 5:7
Let His will be done. Let His seed produce good fruit within you. Therefore:
“Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7
Fellowship with God
I cannot emphasize how important it is to spend time in the Word of God and prayer. It’s so easy for our hearts to be hardened, but when we continue to abide in Christ, the Lord bears the fruit. So we must stick to Jesus throughout the day.
We need to drink His living water daily and let our bodies be washed with pure water. We have to humble ourselves before the Father and ask Him to help transform us.
The Bible teaches us to come to Jesus exactly as we are. Therefore, rather than running away from Him when you sin, run to Him and ask for forgiveness.
Do not fall asleep, spiritual sleep, when your heart becomes hardened by the deceitfulness of the pleasures of this world. You will start to be lukewarmand estranged from God.
So let us not grieve Him, but instead:
“Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.”
Philippians 4:4
I hope you find this helpful. If you need prayer, I’m here and would be honored to pray for you. ❤️

for nearly 81 years ,I have lived my way and in my life have sinned greatly, after reading your words of GOD, I am wondering if I have a chance to be redeemed from my sins and still receive the HOLY SPIRIT .All these years I knew there was a GOD and JESUS was His Son, and I still sinned. Do I even have a chance to even be received into His fold?
First, I want to say that I’m truly sorry you’ve had to walk through these difficult times. But I want to assure you—YES! It is never too late to be welcomed and adopted into God’s family. As long as we have breath, His arms remain open to receive us.
Jesus is always ready to welcome, forgive, and cleanse us from all iniquity when we humble ourselves, run to His loving arms and turn to Him in repentance.
Romans 11:22-23 beautifully expresses this truth:
“Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you too will be cut off. And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again.”
We are saved by grace through faith—and Jesus is mighty and always able to set the captives free.
If you’re looking for more guidance, I highly recommend the YouTube video “How to Live through the Spirit & Overcome Sin & Addiction” by Daniel Maritz. It offers excellent insight on this topic.
I pray that God leads you into all truth, strengthens your faith, and fills you with His peace. I will keep you in my prayers. May the Lord be your Rock, your Savior, and your Good Shepherd!
Thank you for writing this! I needed it. Im sending it to myself to reread. It is very helpful to me! I have been carrying my own troubles and burdens for a long time. I’m a caregiver and have been wondering why I haven’t felt the Holy Spirit. It’s because I’ve been doing all the worrying. So many bad things has been happening at home, things breaking down inside the home and vehicles. It’s been a misery! I know my faith has been lacking because everything falls on me to take care of.
Hi, Marla! I just prayed for you! I’m so glad you found it helpful. I want to encourage you with these three powerful Bible verses: “Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you,” 1 Peter 5:7, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,” Matthew 11:28, and “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you,” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.
No matter what you’re facing, don’t lose heart—God is faithful! He is good! Even when everything seems to be going wrong, He is still working all things together for good. Sometimes instead of a river, God often gives us a brook, which may be running today and dried up tomorrow. Why? To teach us not to rest in our blessings but in the Blesser himself. He is Jehovah Jireh, our Provider, and He will take care of you.
When the waves seem overwhelming, fix your eyes on Jesus—for one glimpse at the waves and storm, let a thousand looks at the Lord follow.
I’ll continue to lift you up in prayer. May God bless you abundantly!
