Confusion Is Not Of God
There was a season when I felt completely overwhelmed, like I was standing in the middle of a storm with no sense of direction. My thoughts were loud, tangled, and restless. I kept trying to “figure things out,” but the more I tried, the deeper I sank.
It felt like drowning… not in water, but in confusion.
And maybe you’re there right now.
You’re overthinking, questioning everything, unsure what God is saying, or if you’re even hearing Him at all. Your heart feels heavy, your mind feels foggy, and peace feels far away.
But let me remind you of this truth:
Confusion does not come from God, but at times it can arise when we are living in sin against the Lord.
For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.
1 Corinthians 14:33 ESV
What Are The Causes Of Spiritual Warfare?
I had to learn this the hard way.
When confusion fills our minds and hearts, it places us in a spiritual battle—often because we’ve knowingly or unknowingly given it access through sin.
One of the most common ways confusion gains access to our hearts is through disobedienceor by stepping outside of God’s will.
If we don’t guard our hearts, that confusion begins to grow roots.
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Proverbs 4:23 ESV
Open doors for confusion can also enter through intimidation. An intimidating spirit unleashes confusion, discouragement and frustration. Its goal is to cause you to lose your proper perspective.
Everything will seem overwhelming, difficult, or even impossible. The stronger the intimidation, the greater the discouragement and hopelessness. If intimidation is not dealt with immediately, it will cause you to do things you never would do if you were not under its influence. This is exactly the goal of intimidation.
I recall one particular time when I could do absolutely nothing all day. I couldn’t shake the heaviness. I would pray, and it seemed God was nowhere. Just as with Elijah, my focus had shifted to me, me, me.
This behavior was exactly what this intimidating, discouraging spirit wanted. It wanted me to back off from what God sent me to do. I immediately went after the root of the symptoms I had struggled with all day- a spirit of intimidation. I boldly broke free and felt released from confusion and frustration.
Before we confidently step out of our boat into the stormy waters of life, we must know the motives of our hearts, lest we sink! There is a difference between a motive that will help you stand and one that will make you sink.
The difference lies in the source of your motive, whether it is rooted in faith and obedience to God or driven by fear, pride, or self-reliance. A heart and life aligned with God’s will will sustain you in the storm, while a motive rooted in the flesh will cause you to sink.
Are you being led by the Spirit or by your flesh?
The enemy doesn’t always attack loudly. Sometimes he comes like waves, whispering subtle, repetitive lies:
“You’re not hearing God correctly.”
“You’re stuck. God is not for you. You’ll never get out of this pit.”
And before we know it, we’re trapped—just like being caught in breaking waves, unable to find steady ground.
Confusion is not a place we are meant to stay; it’s a signal to return to God.
Spirit of Confusion Symptoms
It’s important to recognize what’s happening so we can respond with spiritual weapons rather than emotion. Here are some common signs:
- Constant overthinking and mental exhaustion
- Inability to make decisions
- Doubting what God has already spoken
- Feeling spiritually “foggy” or feeling far from God
- Losing peace, even in small things
- Feeling stuck or lacking vision
If this resonates with you, pause and ask yourself:
Did I bring this to God, or did I try to carry it alone?
Spirit of Confusion: Ask for Wisdom
The turning point for me came when I stopped trying to solve everything myself… and simply prayed:
“I can’t do this in my own strength anymore; I’m sinking deeper and deeper. Please help me, Jesus. Open my eyes to what caused this confusion, and lift me to the surface so I can breathe in Your life again.”
We must ask for wisdom, believing God will do what He has said He will.
Because Scripture reminds us that God gives wisdom generously to those who ask.
And when we surrender to Jesus Christ, something beautiful happens:
As we surrender to His flow of love, the waves of His Son’s light begin to awaken us—from restlessness, from helplessness, from that heavy fog.
His light breaks through the confusion.
How To War Against The Spirit Of Confusion
Confusion is not defeated by more thinking; it is defeated by truth and surrender.
Here’s how we fight:
Return to God Immediately.Don’t sit in confusion. Run to Him. Pray.
Fall on your knees if you have to. Be honest. Be raw.
Anchor Yourself in Truth. The enemy lies, but God’s Word is steady.
When everything feels unstable, truth becomes your anchor. God’s Word will feed and build you up.
Confess and Surrender.Sometimes confusion lingers because we’re holding onto something: fear, control, or even hidden, unrepentant sin.
But as we confess and repent, the fog begins to lift, and clarity returns.
Guard Your Heart.Be careful what voices you allow in—your thoughts, media, forcing your own will, or unrepentant sin.
Protect your peace intentionally.
Find Peace In God
There is something so tender you can experience again and again:
When you finally stop striving… and surrender, God meets us right there.
If we don’t surrender, confusion deepens. We begin to believe lies, lose clarity, and slowly stop recognizing God’s voice.
But when we turn back?
Everything changes.
The waves settle.
The noise quiets.
The light returns.
Submit To God
Set away confusion and focus on God, who has already won.
You were never meant to figure everything out alone.
He is your Anchor in every storm, holding you steady with His unshakable peace when life feels uncertain, and the waves rise.
He is your strength in weakness, for when you are weak, He is strong in you (2 Corinthians 12:9–10).
He is your loving Father, the One who knows you completely and still chooses to love you unconditionally, guiding you with tenderness and grace.
He is your faithful Shepherd, leading you with wisdom, correcting you in love, and providing for your every need, never leaving you to wander alone.
So today, ask yourself:
Will I submit to the enemy’s lies…
Or will I stand on God’s truth?
Because everything depends on that choice.
Draw near to Him.
Let His living water cleanse your thoughts. Let His truth renew your mind. Confess your sins, and let His peace cover your heart as you seek Him in the midst of confusion.
And watch how the confusion… fades.
